whether androids have essence ---- Alex C's Journal Prompt

on Wed Mar 28, 2018 7:35 pm
Existentialists believe that whether we humans are created by God or not, people exist before having our essence. Existentialists presume that living in our world is meaningless and our essence, which defines our entire life and eventual purpose, is given by ourselves. In other words, our life purpose isn't designated by God or destiny. Rather, we can and must choose our own purpose for our lives and to fulfill it for our pleasure. Existentialists also develop the concept of absurdity which refers to the search for answers in an answerless world. Humans obtain their own essence after they experience significant events and ponder about their eventual goal. In the novel, if we apply the existentialists’ view of life, then Rick Deckard has already found his purpose, which is to hunt down new Nexus-6 androids for bounty to buy a real sheep. In contrast, his wife Iran hasn’t given herself a purpose. According to the chapter 1, Iran was depicted as a bored and desperate woman. In chapter 8, when Deckard called her to express affection, she was still indifferent. From Iran, we can see the absurdity of the world because she is totally lack of purpose and even lost the desire to search. These androids, however, show great vitality towards life and work. Luba Luft was busy with practicing her performance and eager to decorate herself. She was indeed chasing for some goals. These Nexus-6 androids were implanted with memories and a list of instructions or codes to direct its actions. Their consciousness was merely the result of a program and interpretation of their false memories. Still they fit in existentialism because they exist, or are built, first and then they use existing rules or memories to find their own purpose. A convincing evidence is Rachel Rosen. At first she inclined to defend the Rosen Association but after she was proved to be an robot, she changed attitude towards Rick Deckard by offering help. Clearly, if the essence of the Nexus-6 androids was pre-determined, then Rachel shouldn’t have that change. Thus, we can conclude that these androids also exist before owning their essence.

I am convinced by your argument and agree with your idea. Specifically, I find your comment, which android exist, or are built, first and then they use existing rules or memories to find their own purpose, particularly reasonable and persuasive. Indeed, memory of an android can determine its character, value and its essence. Although they are not real humans, they take actions and make decisions base on who they think they are. The example of the transition of Rachel's mentality perfectly proves this point of view.
